Fiumicino is a town and comune in the province of Rome, Lazio, central Italy. It is famous for the presence of the Leonardo da Vinci Airport, the busiest airport in Italy and the fifth busiest in Europe.
History
Fiumicino was erected as a comune in 1992; previously it was part of Rome.
Etymology
The name means little river. The town of "Fiumicino" should not be confused with its namesake, Fiumicino, a small river near Rimini.
Economy
Fiumicino is home to the largest airport in Italy, the Leonardo da Vinci Inernational Airport. In addition, it has a large fishing center on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast and a sea resort.
