The common ancestor of the Darod clan and a descendant of the Banu Hashim clan, the clan that the Prophet Muhammad clan belonged to. Abdirahman descended from Muhamad ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib, cousin of the Prophet.

Biography

his exact date of birth is unknown, but many believe he lived in the 12th century. Abdirahman bin Ismail, more commonly known as Darod, was a member of the Banu Hashim clan. As the name states, he was born in the city of Jabarta, a metropolitan Islamic city in the Zeila region in modern day Somalia. He was the son of a famous Sufi Sheikh that was born and died in Yemen, Ismail bin Ibrahim Al Jabarti. It is said that Abdirahman married a local Somali Dir chief's daughter, and had 5 sons.

Lineage

According to many medieval and modern Islamic historians, Darod is desceded from Aqeel ibn Abi Talib, the cousin of the Prophet and brother of Ali ibn Abi Talib. An ancient Islamic history book, called Aqeeliyoon by Al-Masudi, talks in detail about the descendants of Aqeel ibn Abi Talib, and Darod is mentioned in the book.

The book has his lineage as: Abdirahmaan Bin Ismaa'iil Bin Ibraahim Bin Abdirahmaan Bin Muhammed Bin Abdi Samad Bin Hanbal Bin Mahdi Bin Ahmed Bin Abdalle Bin Muhammed Bin Aqail Bin Abu-Talib Bin Abdul-Mutalib Bin Hashim Bin Qusaya.
